The writer of his beloved Bohemian Forest, Karel Klostermann, wrote about river Otava and its romantic valleys. The Otava cycling route begins high in mountains of Bohemain Forest near Modrava and joins the Vltava river near Zvíkovské Podhradí. The route is signposted as routes 33, 331, 313, 312, 2114, 2118, 2108, 1066, 1045, 1225 and sometimes with a logo. The route offers mountainous sections in Bohemian Forest but also relaxed cycling along the Vchýnicko-Tetovský canal on the Vydra River. The Otava valley starts near Anín and follows it all the way to Sušice. This section takes you across the foothils of Bohemian Forest to the mediaeval castle of Rabí to historic town Horažďovice. In Strakonice visit the local castle and Museum of Mid-Vltava region. Before Písek, which is famous for its stone bridge, dive deep into the countryside of South Bohemian fish ponds around Putim. Otava cycle route gets closer to the river in Písek and beyond. You can watch the confluence of Otava and Vltava rivers from a look out point Doupata. The route ends after 133 km in Varvažov (palace). From here you can cross the Zvíkov-Otava bridge and join the EuroVelo 7/Vltava cycling route. We recommend to reserve 4 days for this journey along the Otava river while using certified cycle friendly services "Cyclists welcome".
